‘Too Premature to Comment’: NCERT on Proposal to Replace ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in Textbooks

New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has responded to recent media reports regarding a proposal to replace ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in their textbooks. In an official statement, the NCERT has deemed it “too premature to comment” on this matter.

The NCERT explained that they are currently in the process of developing new syllabi and textbooks. To facilitate this, they have engaged various Curricular Area Groups consisting of domain experts. As a result, they believe it is too early to provide a definitive response to the news.

It has been reported that the next batch of NCERT books will feature the name ‘Bharat’ instead of ‘India.’ The proposal to make this change was reportedly unanimously accepted by a committee led by IC Issac, who chairs one of the 25 panels responsible for altering or revising the content in NCERT books.
