23rd November: Today Is ‘Fibonacci Day’

Fibonacci Day is observed on November 23 annually to honor one of the most influential mathematicians of the Middle Ages namely Leonardo Bonacci.

The day recognises the significance and cost of Fibonacci’s contributions to mathematics.

The Fibonacci numbers were published in his book, Liber Abaci in the year 1202.

Fibonacci’s book introduced the Western World to the Hindu-Arabic numeral system we use today.

This numeral system writes numbers as 1,2,3, etc. instead of Roman numerals I, II, III, etc.

Why is Fibonacci Day observed on November 23?

It is observed on November 23 because the digits of this date form a Fibonacci sequence. Or we can say that when the date is written in mm/dd format (11/23) it forms a Fibonacci sequence; 1,1,2,3.

What is a Fibonacci Sequence?

It is a series of numbers where a number is the sum of the two numbers before it. Or the sequence of numbers in a series where a number is the total of the two numbers before it.

For example, 1,1,2,3 is a sequence. Here in this series, 2 is the total of the two numbers before it (1+1). In the same way, 3 is the total of the two numbers before it (1+2).

This pattern of counting means that each number is the sum of the previous two. (0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13, etc.) Computer data storage and processing use this number sequence today.

The sequence is also useful in the trading of stocks and architecture.
