Over 118 Prisoners Escape From Rain Damaged Jail in Nigeria

At least 118 inmates escaped from a prison in Suleja near the Nigerian capital Abuja when heavy rains damaged the jail on Wednesday night.

The downpour, which lasted several hours, damaged portions of this medium-security prison, including its boundary wall. Taking advantage of it, the prisoners escaped from the jail.

Search operations are on to nab the fugitives. According to reports, 10 of the fugitives have been apprehended by security agencies. Efforts are on to recapture the rest.

Although the details of the escaped prisoners have not been revealed yet as per reports, in the past members of the Boko Haram Islamist insurgent group have been locked up in Suleja prison.

In July 2022, around 440 inmates were freed during an Islamic State attack on a high-security prison in the capital Abuja.
