Putin Orders Counteroffensive as Ukraine Deepens Incursion

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday issued a direct order to his military to ‘dislodge’ Ukrainian forces who have penetrated deep into Russian territory. This comes as a response to a surprise Ukrainian offensive that has captured over two dozen settlements in the Kursk region, marking the most significant cross-border attack since World War II.

Over 1,20,000 civilians have been evacuated from the conflict zone, as authorities grapple with the escalating crisis. Regional governor Alexei Smirnov reported at least 12 civilian fatalities and 121 injuries.

Ukrainian officials have described the operation as a strategic move to divert Russian resources, destabilise the country and alleviate pressure on Ukrainian forces in other regions. Kyiv has reportedly deployed thousands of troops in the incursion, penetrating up to 30 kilometres into Russian territory.

Moscow has countered with reinforcements, including tanks, artillery and drones, while claiming to have repelled multiple Ukrainian attacks and downed numerous drones. However, the Kremlin acknowledges the depth of Ukrainian penetration and the challenges posed by the unexpected offensive.

As the situation intensifies, Russia has expanded evacuation zones, and residents are fleeing to neighbouring regions and Moscow. The Kremlin has also reported an uptick in volunteer enlistments, signalling a mobilisation of domestic support.
