Red Lipstick Banned in North Korea, Know Why

North Korea, under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, in an unusual move has banned use of red lipstick by its women.

North Korea claims its adherence to communism. The colour red has historical links with Communism. Yet North Korea has banned red lipstick.

For the leader of North Korea red lipstick is a symbol of capitalism, and not Communist ideas. The Government of North Korea is against heavy makeup of women as it considers it to be a sign of Western influence.

The Kim Jung Un regime feels that red lipstick can make women look too attractive, which is against the government’s norm for citizens to remain simple and modest. So, as per North Korean law, women are only allowed to wear minimal makeup.

Apart from red lipstick, the Kim Jong Un regime has banned several other items like skinny or blue jeans, body piercings, and certain hairstyles and long hair for women. People can have only those hairstyles approved by the government.

People who disobey these rules can face severe consequences in North Korea and face fines, imprisonment, may be stopped in public and their clothes could be cut up.
