2,000 Kg Hippos Can Become Airborne! Claim UK Scientists

Massive hippopotamus, which can weigh up to 2000 Kg at times can be airborne, claims a study by scientists in the UK. Researchers at the Royal Veterinary College in Hertfordshire near London studied footage of hippos to come to this conclusion.

The study states that hippos reach their top speed to take off while chasing rivals.

Scientists say the slow-motion videos showed that while chasing off rival hippos, the herbivores lift all four feet off the ground at once up to 15% of the time.

To study the hippos, the researchers assessed their videos frame by frame to see if their feet ever left the ground. After reviewing these videos, they concluded that hippos typically stick to trotting when they are moving, but when in a rush they can become airborne.
