WATCH: 1 Dead, Several Injured as Building’s Balcony Collapses During Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The balcony of a two-storey building collapsed during the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Ahmedabad’s Dariyapur, Gujarat, killing one and injuring eight others. The mishap occurred while locals were gathered on the street to watch the grand procession. A video capturing the incident depicts a portion of the building collapsing on the spectators.

According to a statement from the police, a 36-year-old man named Mehul Panchal passed away while undergoing treatment at a civil hospital. The authorities reported that the condition of the remaining injured individuals was stable.

Ahmedabad witnessed the commencement of the 146th Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, attracting numerous devotees along the 18-kilometre route of the magnificent procession. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel conducted the ceremonial “Pahind Vidhi” in the morning, symbolically clearing the path for the chariots using a golden broom, as reported by PTI.

Additionally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah participated in the early morning “mangala aarti” at the temple and expressed his reverence for the Yatra, referring to it as a remarkable blend of faith and devotion, with a divine and unforgettable experience of Lord Jagannath’s darshan.

The Rath Yatra, conducted under tight security, featured a multitude of elephants, camel-pulled carts, and trucks adorned with devotional tableaux. The procession garnered immense enthusiasm from the densely packed crowd that lined both sides of the roads.
