New Delhi: Air India recently signed purchase agreements with Airbus and Boeing, marking a significant milestone in aviation. Valued at $70 billion based on list prices, this deal is one of the largest aircraft orders in civil aviation history. The agreements were formalized during the Paris Air Show, a prominent industry event. Air India’s firm orders consist of 470 aircraft, including models such as A350-1000, A350-900, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 777X widebody aircraft, Airbus A320neo, Airbus A321neo, and Boeing 737MAX narrowbody aircraft.
By acquiring these modern and fuel-efficient aircraft, Air India positions itself for long-term growth. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, expressed optimism that this significant step would showcase modern aviation to the world.
Air India has also partnered with Satair, an Airbus company, and Boeing Global Services to provide comprehensive fleet support, including maintenance provisioning, digital applications, parts, and modification services.
The delivery of the first A350s is expected later this year, with the majority of the ordered aircraft arriving from mid-2025. To expedite fleet and network expansion, Air India has already started receiving leased Boeing 777s and Airbus A320s.
Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD of Air India, expressed pride in the ambitious fleet renewal and expansion program. He emphasized the airline’s commitment to operating advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft across its extensive route network within the next five years. The goal is to rebuild Air India as a global airline, reflecting India’s confident posture on the world stage.
