Congress Appoints Kanhaiya Kumar as In-Charge of Party’s Student Wing NSUI

New Delhi: Congress has appointed Kanhaiya Kumar as the in-charge of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the party. Known for his passionate speeches and hailing from the Hindi heartland, Kumar’s appointment comes ahead of the upcoming general elections next year. The announcement was made in a letter signed by Congress General Secretary K C Venugopal, stating that Kumar will take up the position with immediate effect.

Kanhaiya Kumar has a background in student politics, having begun his involvement in 2007 at Patna College of Commerce. He gained prominence in September 2015 when he became the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) and the leader of the All India Students Federation (AISF).

In 2021, Kumar joined the Congress Party, transitioning from the Communist Party of India (CPI). Expressing his reasons for joining, he stated that he sees Congress not just as a party, but as an idea and the country’s oldest and most democratic party.

Kanhaiya Kumar is known for his strong criticism of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has frequently shared the stage with other young leaders like Jignesh Mevani and Hardik Patel at various political rallies.

In 2016, Kumar faced legal charges of sedition by the Delhi Police for his involvement in an event held at the JNU campus.
