DigiLocker to Come Pre-Installed In Future Android Phones

New Delhi: The tech giant revealed plans to soon add Android’s Files app support for the document storage provider DigiLocker at the Google for India event on Monday. Google intends to make it simple for consumers to access their government-issued digital papers, such as their PAN, passport, Aadhaar, or any other, on their smartphone through its cooperation with the National eGovernment Division (NeGD). The purpose of this collaboration is to reduce the time spent looking through hundreds of files for crucial ID documentation.

According to Google, the Files app will be able to recognise the user’s official documents and group them into a single, protected folder. Google added that the algorithm will be able to extract PAN card and Aadhaar card information from files saved on the Files app.

The documents kept in Google Files “will be in an isolated environment on the device, and can only be accessed with a unique lock screen authentication,” according to the statement. Simply put, this means that only the phone’s owner will have access to the documents.

By March 2022, DigiLocker had more than 100 million users. DigiLocker now has more than 137 million registered users, according to Abhishek Singh, President and CEO of NeGD and the MD & CEO of Digital India Corporation (DIC). He added that the service has 2,300 issuers and that more than 5.6 billion documents have been produced to date.
