First Batch Of Indian Troops In Maldives Replaced: Centre

New Delhi: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday the completion of the first phase of a troop withdrawal from the Maldives. Military personnel previously stationed in the island nation have been replaced with technical specialists.

“The turnaround of the first team who operated the ALH helicopter is complete,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, referring to the Advanced Light Helicopter. “The first batch for replacement has been completed.”

This development comes amid a formal request by the Maldives government, led by President Mohamed Muizzu, for the withdrawal of Indian troops from Malé. The move fulfills a key campaign promise of Muizzu’s party.

Last month, India deployed the first contingent of technical personnel to replace their military counterparts. The complete withdrawal is expected by May 10th, 2024. This deadline was reiterated by President Muizzu, who emphasized the exclusion of “any Indian military personnel” – both uniformed and civilian – beyond that date.

India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, expressed confidence in resolving the situation amicably. He underscored the exclusively humanitarian and medical role played by Indian military personnel and aviation resources in the Maldives.

“Diplomacy is the only solution,” Minister Jaishankar said, acknowledging potential misunderstandings between nations. “We need to ensure people have complete information and are not misled.”
