ICC Announces Reserve Days For T20 World Cup 2024 Semifinals And Final

Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday announced key decisions following their Board meeting in Dubai. The focus was on the future of international white-ball cricket, with the introduction of a mandatory stop-clock rule and reserve days for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 knockout stages taking centre stage.

To ensure a result in crucial knockout stages, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will have reserve days scheduled for the semi-finals and final. Additionally, a minimum number of overs need to be bowled for a match to be constituted: five overs for the team batting second in the group stage and Super Eights, and ten overs in the knockouts.

Following successful trials, the ICC confirmed the stop-clock will be permanently implemented in all ODIs and T20Is. This rule enforces the fielding side to bowl the first ball of their next over within 60 seconds of the previous one concluding. Penalties for breaching this rule include warnings and five-run deductions. The stop-clock is expected to improve match flow, with data suggesting a 20-minute reduction in ODI match times. The rule will be in effect from June 1, 2024, including the upcoming T20 World Cup.

The qualification process for the 2026 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, was also finalized. The format includes 12 automatic qualifiers: the hosts, the top eight teams from the 2024 World Cup, and potentially two to four additional teams based on ICC T20I rankings as of June 30, 2024. The remaining eight teams will progress through regional qualifiers.
