Heavy Rains Batter Chennai; 2 Dead, Educational Institutions Shut In 9 Districts Across TN

Chennai: The most recent weather report from the India Meteorological Department predicts that Tamil Nadu will continue to see heavy rain and thunderstorms over this week.

On October 29, the northeast monsoon struck the state, bringing widespread, heavy rains to Chennai and the other regions. In nine districts of Tamil Nadu, schools and colleges will not be in session today.

Since Monday, at least two persons have died in rain-related accidents in Chennai. In the first case, a lady, died after the wall of a residential building collapsed in the city’s Pulianthope area on Tuesday night, while another one was electrocuted to death.

In several low-lying districts of north Chennai, water entered residential areas. The Red Hills area recorded a significant downpour of 13 cm on a single day, followed by 12 cm in Perambur, the highest in three decades. Whereas Nungambakkam, a key city district, recorded 8 cm of rain.

S Balachandran, the director of Chennai’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), predicts that over the next few hours, there will likely be heavy to very heavy rain in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin held a meeting on Tuesday with all of the district collectors and other authorities via video conference to assess the flood mitigation measures that have been put in place.
