Supreme Court Questions Centre’s Inaction on Women’s Reservation in BJP-Ruled States

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday lashed out at the Central government for its failure to take action against BJP-ruled states. The court raised questions about the government’s inaction in providing reservations for women in Nagaland, stating that it takes a strong stance against non-allied state governments but remains passive when it concerns its own party in power.

The stern observations were made during a contempt plea hearing, which alleged non-compliance with the court’s order to conduct local body elections in Nagaland with a 33% reservation for women. Justice SK Kaul emphasized that reservation is an affirmative action concept, and it is perplexing why the constitutional provision is not being adhered to, especially in a state like Nagaland, where women’s education, economic, and social status are commendable.

The court also touched upon the issue of violence in BJP-ruled Manipur during the proceedings.

This critique by the apex court highlights the importance of implementing affirmative action measures and women’s reservations to promote gender equality and empowerment in the country. The matter raises concerns about political accountability and consistency in addressing issues within the ruling party’s states.
