SC Dismisses Petitions Against Redrawing Constituencies in Jammu & Kashmir

New Delhi: A plea opposing the government’s decision to establish the Delimitation Commission for redistricting the Assembly and Lok Sabha districts in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir was rejected by the Supreme Court today.

As mandated by the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019, a Delimitation Commission constituted by the Union Government was previously responsible for determining the boundaries of the constituencies in J&K. The Delimitation Commission carved out an additional six Assembly seats for the Jammu region and one for the Kashmir valley.

Elections in the erstwhile State were made possible by the Commission’s order, where the most recent Assembly elections were held in 2014.
