Asian Games: Indian Women’s Cricket Team Enters Semis Despite Quarter Final Washout, Know How

New Delhi: Indian Women’s Cricket team entered the Asian Games semifinal in China after its rain-interrupted Quarter Final match against Malaysia was called off.  But Team India secured a Semifinal berth.

On Thursday, the Malaysian team won the toss and chose to bowl. The strong Indian team smashed 173 for 2 in 15 overs. Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues batted superbly to help India set the massive target. However the Indian innings was interrupted by rains, and the match was reduced to 15 overs a side. When Malaysia began their batting, the showers opened up again, and the referees called off the match.

Why India in the Semis despite a washout quarterfinal

The seedings depend on the ICC rankings. India women are ranked fourth in the latest ICC ODI rankings while Malaysia are 27th. In fact, India is the top seed at the 19th Asian Games courtesy of their ranking in ICC women’s cricket. If their semi-final is also washed out then they will again advance to the final.

India women’s cricket team is making their Asian Games debut. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have received direct entry to the quarter-finals as they are the top-ranked Asian sides in the ICC Women T20 Rankings.
