At Least 11 Killed as Bus Falls Into River in Sri Lanka

At least 11 people died and 40 others were injured when a passenger bus fell into a river in Sri Lanka on Sunday.

The ill-fated bus was transporting over 67 passengers to Akkaraipaththu when it met with an accident on the bridge over the Mahaweli river. It is one of the four main rivers in Sri Lanka.

The speeding bus hit the wall of the Kotaleeya bridge at Manampitiya and then fell into the river. Reckless driving is suspected to be the reason behind this accident.

Local villagers and defence personnel rescued some of the bus passengers. Several others were washed away. Divers are being used to recover the bodies. The rescued injured were rushed to Polonnaruwa Hospital.
