Bank Cashier Misappropriates Rs 1.15 Cr and Absconds in Cuttack Dist

Cuttack: A bank cashier allegedly misappropriated Rs 1.15 crore worth of deposits of customers. He has absconded. The Economic Offence wing (EOW) of the Odisha Crime Branch has registered a cheating case against him. An investigation is on to nab him.

As per the complaint lodged against this bank cashier named Bansidhar Majhi (27) by the Regional Rural Bank, he misappropriated money while posted at Pahanga branch and Binishpur branch.

He allegedly receives cash from customers and issued counterfoils for deposits. But he did not update the deposits in the bank’s core banking system. He manually updated passbooks of depositors and removed their contact numbers registered with the bank to prevent customers from getting messages about deposits on their phones.

Following complaints from some customers, the bank conducted an inquiry to find serious irregularities. Majhi, who was placed under suspension in May 2022, allegedly used fraudulent means to to take away money from the accounts of some customers through online transfers. He transferred this money to his own account and those of his friends and relatives.
