Delhi mayor election on Feb 22, L-G approves CM Kejriwal’s recommendation

New Delhi: Election for the post of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be held on February 22. As per the order issued by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, elections for the mayor, deputy mayor, and six members of the standing committee will be held on that day.

On Saturday Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had written a letter to the Lieutenant Governor requesting for polls for the mayor to be held on February 22. Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena agreed to Delhi Chief Minister’s proposal.

The elections for mayor in the national capital have been stalled thrice even though the civic polls concluded on December 4.

The Supreme Court on Friday clarified that nominated members of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) cannot have voting rights in the mayoral election.

Paving the path for the election process for the post of mayor of Delhi, the Supreme Court bench said, “The notice for the election of mayor and the first meeting of the MCD shall be issued within 24 hours and the notice shall fix the date at which the elections of the mayor, deputy mayor, and standing committee members shall be held.”

Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) mayoral candidate, Shelly Oberoi, had approached the Supreme Court seeking early conduct of the mayoral election.
