Five Children Suffocate to Death by smoke of Angithi Kept in Room in UP

Lucknow: Five children of a family died of asphyxiation as they slept in a closed room with a burning angithi in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district. Two others were rescued in critical condition and were admitted to a hospital.

According to police sources, the cause of death was oxygen shortage as well as carbon monoxide poisoning because of the burning angithi in their closed room.

Seven members of the family slept in the same room on Monday night. When the door of their house was not opened till Tuesday evening, the neighbours became suspicious and entered the house breaking the door.

The house was owned by one Raheezuddin. His three children as well as two children of his relatives died in the mishap. The condition of his wife and brother is serious.

A heavy police force, including Superintendent of Police Kunwar Anupam Singh, and administrative officials reached the spot and started a probe into the matter.

Coal burning in an angithi produces harmful gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc. In a closed room, these gases reduce the availability of oxygen causing asphyxiation and even death.
