Khalistan Supporters & Indians Spar in Australia; 2 Arrested

Indians and Khalistan supporters clashed in Australia during a referendum called by the banned organization named ‘Sikhs for Justice’. This separatist organization operating outside India is demanding formation of a separate Khalistan nation.

This spat between the two groups occurred on Sunday afternoon at the Federation Square, Melbourne, where the banned organization was holding its voting, reported The Age. Indian supporters reached the spot with the tricolor to oppose the Khalistan supporting outfit. Both groups clashed with each other.

The Victoria Police used pepper spray to quell the protests. Two persons said to be instigating the clash were arrested. They were two men aged 34 and 39.

As per video clips making rounds on social media, Khalistan supporters attacked the Indians with sticks and also damaged Indian national flags.

Two men were injured at the demonstration, The Age reported.

In January Khalistan supporters attacked three Hindu Temples in Melbourne with anti-India graffiti.

On Republic Day, the Indian High Commission in Canberra issued a statement asking the Australian government to ensure the safety and security of Indians with referendums being planned in Melbourne and Sydney.
