Labourer Pays Security Deposit in Re 1 Coins to Contest Polls in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: A daily labourer collected Re 1 coins from his well-wishers to raise Rs 10,000 that he deposited as the security deposit to contest the assembly polls in Gujarat.

This labourer named Mahendra Patni has filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate for Gandhinagar North assembly seat. Through it he is trying to draw public attention towards his own plight and other poor people like him. The slum in which he was living was demolished in 2019 for the construction of a hotel. Around 521 families living in this slum had lost their houses.

According to him, these homeless families encouraged him to contest the polls.

As this poor man was not having money in hand to pay up the security deposit, residents of his slum as well as some other labourers collected Rs 10,000 in Re 1 coins for him.

As per reports, earlier this week, while filing his nomination papers he paid the Rs 10,000 security deposit to the election commission in Re 1 coins.
