Nagaland Gets its First Woman MLA after 60 Years

Kohima: After 60 years of its formation, Nagaland got its first woman MLA in Hekani Jakhalu on Thursday. She is a candidate for the ruling NDPP. She won from Dimapur-III Assembly constituency.

Hekani Jakhalu won by a margin of 1,536 votes defeating Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).

This time Nagaland assembly may have more than one woman MLA. Another woman candidate, Salhoutuonuo Kruse of the NDPP, was also leading in the Western Angami seat. Till 2.10 pm on Thursday, the BJP and NDPP have bagged two and eight seats respectively.

Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Yanthungo Patton was confident that the ruling NDPP-BJP alliance was on course to return to power in the state with a thumping majority.
