NHRC Seeks Report from Odisha DGP on Naba Das Murder

Bhubaneswar: Odisha DGP was directed by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to submit a consolidated action taken report in connection with the assassination of Health Minister Naba Das in four weeks.

Chairperson of HRF India, Manoj Jena had sought NHRC’s intervention in this high-profile broad daylight murder case. He urged the NHRC for an independent and impartial inquiry into the murder to ascertain the mystery behind it. Odisha Crime Branch is investigating the case. The investigation process is being monitored by former Orissa HC judge Justice JP Das.

Earlier a civil rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy had approached the NHRC with the contention that the health minister was killed due to the failure of the government as it failed to take into account mental health and the physical parameters while assessing efficiency and performance of staff, especially police personnel posted with dignitaries and for maintaining of law and order in the state. Hearing his petition, on February 7, the NHRC asked the Odisha DGP to initiate proper action in this case within eight weeks.

Naba Das died after being shot at by a police ASI Gopal Das at Brajrajnagar in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district on January 29.
