PIL in Patna HC Against Govt Decision to Release Gangster-Politician Anand Mohan Serving Life Sentence

Patna: Amar Jyoti, the Bihar in-charge of Bhim Army’s Bharat Ekta Mission, approached Patna High Court on Wednesday against Bihar government’s order to former MP and life convict Anand Mohan and 26 others from jail.

He filed a PIL alleging that the Nitish Kumar government tweaked the state’s jail manual to “favour criminals”. The order of the Bihar government has drawing flak from the Dalit community.

Anand Mohan, a former gangster-turned-politician was freed from jail. He was convicted for the murder of former Gopalganj district collector G Krishnaiah in 1994. He was a Dalit IAS officer.

Krishnaiah was lynched to death by a mob led by Anand Mohan. His car was attacked during the funeral procession of a gangster named Chotan Shukla.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, strongly objected to the Bihar government’s move to set Anand Mohan Singh free.

The Central IAS Association expressed its deep dismay at the decision of the state government of Bihar to release the convicts of the brutal killing of G Krishnaiah, IAS, former district magistrate of Gopalganj, by a change in classification rules of prisoners.

Uma Devi, wife of the deceased IAS, appealed the President and PM Modi to intervene in the matter. “I appeal to send him (Anand Mohan) back to jail,” said Uma Devi. Padma, the daughter of the then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah, said, “It’s disheartening for us that Anand Mohan Singh has been released from jail today. The government should reconsider this decision. I request Nitish Kumar ji to give a second thought to this decision. With this decision, his government has set a wrong example. It is unfair not just to a family but to the whole nation. We will appeal against this decision.”
