Poor Mother Sells Infant Daughter for Rs 800 in Mayurbhanj Dist

Bhubaneswar: Because of abject poverty, a mother preferred to sell off her eight-month-old daughter at Mahulia village under Khunta police station in Mayurbhanj district for only Rs 800. Three persons involved in this child sale were arrested by police on Monday.

According to reports, the concerned Karami Murmu opted for this act because of the financial woes as well as the worries related to the birth of a second daughter. She allegedly sold her eight-month-old infant girl to a couple for only Rs 800. Her husband, who is a migrant worker serving in Tamil Nadu did not know anything about this.

Karami’s neighbour Mahi Murmu is said to have arranged for a couple to buy the infant daughter of Karami for Rs 800.

When Karami’s husband returned back home, he could not find his younger daughter and inquired about her. When he learned that his wife had sold off their second daughter, he complained about this at the Khunta police station.

Investigating the case, police arrested three persons in connection with the sale of the baby. The arrested persons included the mediator Mahi Murmu and the couple who bought the baby.

The sold-off baby was rescued and handed over to her parents.
