Riots in Brussels after Morocco Defeats Belgium in FIFA World Cup

Brussels (Belgium): Riots erupted in Brussels after Morocco defeated Belgium 2-0 in FIFA World Cup 2022.

Morocco’s victory over Belgium triggered violent scenes in Brussels. A car and some electric scooters were set on fire. The riots took place in several places across the Belgian capital.

Dozens of soccer fans smashed shop windows, threw fireworks, and torched vehicles. A journalist was injured.

Around a hundred police officers were mobilized to maintain law and order. the place. Residents were warned to avoid areas where the riot was going on.  Metro stations were closed and streets were sealed off to check the spread of violence.

“Around 7 p.m. calm returned and preventive patrols remain in place in the sectors concerned,” police spokesperson Ilse Van de Keere said.

“The rioters used pyrotechnic material, projectiles, sticks, and set fire on the public highway,” the police said. “Also, a journalist was injured in the face by fireworks. It is for these reasons that it was decided to proceed with police intervention, with the deployment of water cannon and the use of tear gas,” the police said.
