Today is World Hindi Day; Know its Importance

January 10 is celebrated every year as World Hindi Day to propagate Hindi as an international language. Millions of people all over the world and Indian Embassies observe this day as ‘Vishwa Hindi Diwas’.

Hindi is the fourth most spoken language in the world after English, Spanish, and Mandarin. Apart from India Hindi is a widely spoken language in other countries like Nepal, Mauritius, Guyana, Suriname, Fiji, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Birth History:

Hindi is a direct descendant of Vedic Sanskrit. It is written in the Devnagari script. The word Hindi is derived from the Persian word Hind which means the ‘land of Indus River’. In India, it is one of the two official languages along with English. We Indians honour Hindi as our National Language.

Hindi Diwas:

Since 2006, January 10 is being observed as World Hindi Day. This day marks the anniversary of the first World Hindi Conference, held in 1975 in Maharashtra’s Nagpur.

World Hindi Day is observed every year. But World Hindi Conference is organised once every three years.

National Hindi Diwas:

The National Hindi Diwas is celebrated on September 14 every year. This date commemorates the adoption of Hindi as one of the official languages by the Constituent Assembly of India in 1949
