Angul: Eye Clinic Sealed After Patients Report Vision Loss Post-Cataract Surgery

Angul: In a concerning incident, an eye clinic in Angul has been sealed by authorities after 13 patients reported partial vision loss following cataract surgery on June 20.

Out of the 26 patients who underwent the procedure, 13 developed severe eye pain, headaches, and vision problems within 24 hours. Their condition deteriorated, prompting a referral to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) for advanced treatment. While 11 patients have recovered and been discharged, two elderly individuals remain hospitalized.

Allegations of medical negligence have surfaced, with relatives of affected patients claiming faulty surgery as the cause of vision loss. The incident has sparked outrage and drawn scrutiny from the district administration.

“An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the complications,” stated Anugul Chief District Medical Officer Shivashankar Mohanty. “Those found responsible will face strict legal action.”

Preliminary investigations suggest a post-surgical infection, possibly due to improperly sterilized surgical instruments, leading to a mass outbreak.

“Thirteen patients suffered partial vision loss after cataract surgery at Pradhan’s Eye Care clinic,” informed Angul Collector Abdaal M. Akhtar. “They were transferred to VIMSAR for treatment, with most patients recovering well. A team has been formed by the CDMO to investigate the matter thoroughly. Stringent action will be taken under the Clinical Establishment Act if the clinic is found to be non-compliant with safety protocols.”
