Koraput Coffee Set To Get Its Distinct GI Tag

Bhubaneswar: A Geographical Indicator (GI) for Koraput coffee has been sought by the Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation of Odisha Ltd (TDCCOL).

Currently, the Koraput varietal is included in the GI for Araku coffee in Andhra Pradesh.

Mansi Nimbhal, the managing director of TDCCOL, stated that Koraput coffee having its own GI certification has become crucial given its existing market position.

On March 1, 2019, the Coffee Board of India, which is part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, obtained the tag for “Araku Valley Arabica,” which comprises coffee from Odisha.

The board asserted that the coffee is grown in Andhra Pradesh and sections of Odisha under the same elevation (3,000 to 5,300 feet above sea level), soil, and climatic circumstances, with the bulk being in Koraput in addition to Kandhamal, Rayagada, Keonjhar, Gajapati, and Kalahandi.

A distinct GI for coffee from Odisha has been informed by the corporation to the Coffee Board. Since the Koraput coffee already has a geographical indicator, Nimbhal was quoted as saying, “We are aiming to prove its uniqueness as compared to that grown in the Araku valley.

Koraput is a non-traditional coffee-growing region on the Indian coffee map. Currently, the blocks of Koraput, Nandapur, Semiliguda, Pottangi, Dasmantpur, Lamtaput, and Laxmipur in the district grow Arabica coffee.
