Odisha’s Largest Wholesale Market ‘Malgodown’ in Cuttack Eyes Relocation for Upgrades

Cuttack: Odisha’s largest wholesale market, Malgodown, is likely to undergo a major transformation with its relocation to a new location alongside National Highway 16 (NH-16) between Phulnakhara and Manguli in Cuttack district.

The current location faces challenges, including congestion, lack of proper drainage, and high transportation costs. Despite raising these issues with the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), no solutions have been implemented.

The Malgodown Traders’ Association intends to submit a proposal to the state government for this move. They aim to secure around 70 acres of land for a modern wholesale market that will address these issues.

Established after the 1866 famine in Odisha, the market initially had five godowns and 15 shops. Over the years, it has grown to encompass 780 wholesale and retail shops, spread across 60 acres of land near Taladanda canal. The market typically handles daily transactions worth around Rs 20 crore.

The new market will feature ample space for truck and vehicle movement, along with facilities such as hotels, banking services, a police outpost, drainage systems, toilets, proper lighting, parking, and rest areas. This move is expected to improve the trading environment and infrastructure for both traders and customers.
