Pangolin Fitted with Tracker Released in Similipal for Conservation Study

Bhubaneswar: A female pangolin from Nandankanan Zoological Park has been equipped with a tracker and released into the Chahala range of Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR). This initiative aims to study the behaviour, habitat, and breeding patterns of the scaly anteater, enhancing conservation efforts for the species.

The release was conducted by a team of forest officials. Monitoring is being carried out by two dedicated teams from Nandankanan and Similipal using trap cameras and very high frequency (VHF) signal receivers with directional (Yagi) antennas. This technology will provide critical data on habitat utilization, health status, and survival, offering valuable insights for the state’s conservation strategies.

The pangolin, initially rescued from Ranpur range of Khordha forest division on June 30, 2023, was in critical condition. After undergoing successful treatment, it was brought to Nandankanan for rehabilitation.

An official from Nandankanan Zoo stated that this study will significantly contribute to the understanding and conservation of the species in Odisha.
