Raksha Bandhan at Puri Srimandir to be Observed Tomorrow

Puri: The state is immersed in festive joy as ‘Gamha Purnima’ or ‘Raksha Bandhan’ is celebrated with religious devotion today. Sisters lovingly tie ‘Rakhi’, a sacred thread, to their brothers, symbolizing a promise of lifelong safety and security. The day is marked by cultural programs and the preparation of special Odia delicacies across households.

Yet, the revered ‘Raksha Bandhan’ ritual will grace Puri Srimandir tomorrow. The occasion coincides with the birthday of elder brother Lord Balabhadra. Goddess Subhadra, the younger sister, will tie special ‘rakhis’ to Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra, emphasizing their special sibling bond.

The ceremonial process of creating ‘rakhis’ for Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra involves intricate steps carried out by Patara Bisoyi servitors. These specially crafted ‘Pata Rakhis’ hold immense significance, as they are tied by Goddess Subhadra to her divine brothers.

Jagannath Culture Researcher, Naresh Chandra Das, explains the profound connection between Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra. During the Rath Yatra, these deities are accompanied by Subhadra instead of Goddess Laxmi, highlighting the unique importance of Raksha Bandhan at Puri Srimandir.
