Tension Mounts In Odisha Assembly After Rahul Gandhi’s Disqualification

Bhubaneswar: Tension mounted in the Odisha Assembly as the Congress members stalled the proceedings of the House by creating a ruckus over the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi.

The House witnessed several adjournments as the Congress legislators protested Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as MP. Later, the Speaker adjourned the House till Monday.

The Congress MLAs stormed into the well and shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They termed the disqualification as ‘murder of democracy’.

Gandhi, on Friday, was disqualified as a member of Lok Sabha a day after his conviction in the Modi surname defamation case. Gandhi’s scion who represents Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala was disqualified under provisions of Article 102 (1) (e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act.

On Thursday, a court in Surat sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in a defamation case, filed on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his remark, “How come to all thieves have Modi as the common surname?”
