Koraput: The general second-class coach of the Visakhapanam-Kirandul passenger special train (08551) derailed at least one wheelset this morning near Sivalingapuram station in the Kottavalasa-Araku section in the Koraput district of Odisha.

Following the detaching of the derailed coach, Anup Kumar Satpathy, the divisional railway manager (DRM) of the Waltair division of the East Coast Railway (ECoR), and a group of officers hurried to the scene in an accident relief medical train.

The ECoR executive said that accident relief trains had been directed to head to the scene and that police were racing to begin urgent restoration efforts.

For travellers who were stuck, alternate transportation arrangements had been made. The restoration of normal operations may take several hours, according to railway authorities.

It should be noted that the area had previously witnessed a similar derailment in September 2022, in which 4 coaches of the same train had been derailed. No one onboard was wounded.
