SP Leader Azam Khan’s Name Removed From Voter List Post-Hate Speech Conviction

Rampur (Uttar Pradesh): The name of Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has been struck off from the voter list in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. On the basis of a complaint from BJP bypoll candidate Akash Saxena, the Rampur Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) decided to remove Azam Khan’s name from the electoral record.

Azam Khan, a former Rampur MLA, was disqualified after being found guilty of hate speech last month. In the case involving the hate speech, Azam Khan received a three-year prison term.

The Rampur Sadar Assembly seat was declared empty when he was disqualified from serving as an MLA.

Consequently, Azam Khan filed a petition with the Supreme Court to challenge his exclusion from the state legislature.

In the meantime, the Rampur byelection notification was released by the Election Commission.

The Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Representation of the People Act, 1951 were cited in the BJP’s plea to have Azam Khan’s name removed from the electoral roll.
