New Delhi: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced the extension of Senior National Team Head Coach Igor Stimac’s contract until 2026. This extension comes as a reward for his successful leadership, which has seen India secure three titles this year. According to the contract terms, Stimac will automatically receive an additional two-year extension if India qualifies for the third round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
Igor Stimac, a former member of Croatia’s 1998 FIFA World Cup third-place team, assumed the role of Blue Tigers’ head coach in 2019. Under his guidance, the Indian national team has claimed four major titles, including two SAFF Championships.
During a virtual interaction, AIFF Secretary General Shaji Prabhakaran expressed the federation’s decision to extend Stimac’s contract, emphasizing the desire for continuity and stability in the national team. Stimac, alongside Prabhakaran and Mahesh Gawli, the assistant coach of the senior men’s team, was present for the announcement.
Stimac’s recent achievements include guiding the Indian men’s team to the round of 16 at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, marking the first time in 13 years that the team has reached this stage in the continental competition.
The AIFF’s decision to extend Stimac’s contract for another two years aligns with their goal of maintaining stability within the national team. Stimac expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and his staff by the AIFF, highlighting the importance of having a stable coaching staff.
