Jasprit Bumrah Dethrones Ravichandran Ashwin to Reclaim No. 1 Test Bowler Spot

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has reclaimed the No. 1 position in the ICC Test Bowling Rankings, overtaking teammate Ravichandran Ashwin.

Bumrah’s stellar performance in India’s seven-wicket victory against Bangladesh in Kanpur, where he claimed six wickets (three in each innings), boosted his rating to 870 points, as per the latest ICC update. This marks the second time Bumrah has held the top spot in the rankings.

Ashwin, who took five wickets in the same match, trails closely behind Bumrah with just one rating point less.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh saw key improvements with Mehidy Hasan climbing to 18th and veteran Shakib Al Hasan moving up to 28th in the rankings.

In other key updates, Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya reached a career-high seventh position after his impressive 18-wicket haul against New Zealand. However, it is India that dominates the rankings update after their series sweep over Bangladesh, placing them at the top of the World Test Championship standings, inching closer to a spot in the 2024 final.

Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, named Player of the Match in the rain-affected Test against Bangladesh, climbed to third place in the ICC Test Batting Rankings after scoring 72 and 51. Jaiswal now trails only England’s Joe Root and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. Teammate Virat Kohli also returned to the top 10, securing sixth place after scores of 47 and 29* in the same series.

Sri Lankan right-hander Kamindu Mendis also made a notable jump to 11th position, while Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews moved up to 20th and 23rd, respectively. Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan also rose to fifth in the all-rounder rankings, as India’s Ravindra Jadeja maintains his lead.

In the white-ball rankings, Australia’s Steve Smith climbed to 20th in ODI rankings. England’s Harry Brook and Ben Duckett reached new career highs, while Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer also improved their positions in the ODI bowling rankings.

On the T20I front, South Africa’s Reeza Hendricks moved to 11th among batters, while Nepal’s Dipendra Singh Airee reached second among all-rounders.
