MS Dhoni Becomes 5th Indian Batter To Complete 5000 IPL Runs

Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni added another feather to an already decorated cap on Monday during the IPL 2023 match against Lucknow Super Giants at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium.

CSK captain Dhoni became the fifth Indian player, after Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina, to complete 5,000 runs in the T20 tournament. Dhoni reached the landmark with back-to-back sixes off Mark Wood in the 20th over after LSG won the toss and asked Chennai to bat.

RCB star Kohli (6706 runs in 224 IPL matches) is currently the highest run-getter in IPL history, followed by Dhawan (6086 in 199 IPL matches), Rohit (5764 runs in 221 IPL matches), David Warner (5668 in 155 IPL matches), Raina (5528 runs in 205 IPL matches), and AB de Villiers (5162 runs in 184 IPL matches).

Before the LSG match, Dhoni had scored 4978 runs in 234 IPL games at an average of 39 and a strike rate of 135, scoring 24 half-centuries. Even though Dhoni would bat lower in the order, he was likely to score the 8 runs required to join the IPL’s 5000-run club. Only six other batters have achieved the feat thus far, and Dhoni has become the first full-time wicket-keeper to do so.

Dhoni already holds the record for the most dismissals by an IPL wicket-keeper, with 170 dismissals (131 catches and 39 stumpings among them). DK is second on the list, with 159 dismissals. The CSK captain will be hoping to add to his tally with his deft glovework behind the stumps.
