EC Imposes 24-Hour Campaign Ban On Abhijit Gangopadhyay For Sexist Remark On Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has barred former Calcutta High Court judge turned politician Abhijit Gangopadhyay from campaigning for 24 hours over sexist remarks directed at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The EC noted the importance of refraining from personal attacks during poll campaigning.

While the BJP has dismissed the incident as a “fake video,” alleging it as a tactic by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to tarnish their image, the purported comments by Gangopadhyay have stirred controversy, particularly amidst the Sandeshkhali row and the ensuing battle for women voters’ support in the state.

Gangopadhyay’s transition from the judiciary to politics, coupled with his alleged controversial statement, has further fueled the ongoing political discourse in Bengal.

Having resigned from the Calcutta High Court to join the BJP in March, his candidacy for the Tamluk constituency has become a focal point in the state’s political landscape, with implications for the ongoing elections.
