Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Holds Preparedness Review Meeting Ahead Of Possible Cyclone ‘Mocha’

Bhubaneswar: In light of the potential formation of cyclone “Mocha” over the Bay of Bengal, Naveen Patnaik, the chief minister of Odisha, presided over a high-level meeting today.

The CM mentioned cyclone ‘Fani’ of 2019 and stated it is challenging to predict cyclone paths during the summer. He gave orders for all involved agencies and officials to be prepared for any situation.

Additionally, if necessary, he suggested moving residents of low-lying and vulnerable areas to cyclone shelters.

The CM was instructed to make plans ahead of time for relief and repair efforts following the hurricane.

Additionally, he asked the Special Relief Commissioner to collaborate with all departments and gave the Chief Secretary instructions to review the situation on a regular basis.

According to Chief Secretary Pradip Kumar Jena, every effort will be made to prevent any casualties from the disaster. This information has been communicated to all Collectors. There are about 1000 cyclone shelters prepared, and other safe locations, such as school buildings, have been found.

On the other side, Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahu claimed that following discussions with the Collectors of 18 districts, control rooms had been set up. According to him, up to 17 NDRF teams and 20 ODRAF teams have been put on standby.

Notably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that a Low-Pressure Area is probably going to form over the Bay of Bengal after May 6.

“A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over Southeast Bay of Bengal around 06th May 2023. Under its influence, a Low-Pressure Area is likely to form over the same region during subsequent 48 hours,” the agency said.

International meteorologist Jason Nicholls has predicted that the system may expand into a cyclone and strike regions between eastern India and Myanmar, even though the IMD has not yet determined whether the low-pressure area would develop into a cyclonic storm or not.
After the formation of the low-pressure area, according to weather experts, a precise forecast of the system’s course and intensity can be made.

If the system develops into a cyclonic storm, it will be given the name “Mocha.”
