Cyclone Mocha: IMD Issues High Rain Alert in Andhra Pradesh & Odisha Till May 9

Bhubaneswar: The Bay of Bengal is expected to experience the formation of a low-pressure system on May 8 that is expected to continue to intensify into a depression and cyclonic storm on May 9.

A cyclonic circulation was detected by the MeT on Saturday in the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is thought to be the initial stage in the formation of a potential severe cyclonic storm in the area next week.

“Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over southeast BoB lay over southeast BoB & adjn South Andaman Sea at 0830 IST of 7th May. LPA is likely to form over the same region on 8th May. To intensify into a depression over SE BoB around 9th May. To intensify into a cyclonic storm,” the IMD said.

“A cyclonic circulation lies over southeast Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood in lower and middle tropospheric levels. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same region by May 8,” said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general, India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to Mohapatra, information regarding the path and strengthening of the cyclone would be released following the establishment of a low-pressure area (LPA). Around May 9, he predicts, the system would concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal, get stronger into a cyclonic storm, and proceed almost northward towards the central Bay of Bengal.
