Paris Olympics Gender Row: Dutee Chand Backs Imane Khelif, Slams Controversy

Paris: The Paris Olympic Games have been thrown into turmoil following a highly controversial women’s boxing match. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who has reportedly been classified as a ‘biological male’, secured an easy win over Italian opponent Angela Carini, who abandoned the bout after just 46 seconds.

The match sparked a firestorm of criticism, with prominent figures such as Elon Musk joining the chorus of voices condemning the International Olympic Committee’s decision to allow Khelif to compete in the women’s division.

Indian sprinter Dutee Chand, who has previously faced similar gender-related controversies, weighed in on the issue. Chand challenged the IOC’s rules on testosterone levels at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland, arguing that hormonal levels do not enhance athletic performance. She expressed her dismay at the current controversy, emphasising the rigorous testing athletes undergo before competing in the Olympics.

Carini’s withdrawal from the match triggered a political response, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni questioning the fairness of the competition.

The IOC, however, has defended its decision, dismissing the allegations against Khelif as misleading.
