NCW Probe Finds Shocking Security Failures, Police Blunders in Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder

Kolkata: The National Commission of Women (NCW) inquiry committee has uncovered significant lapses in the investigation and security at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor on August 9.

In its preliminary findings, the committee criticised Kolkata Police for a deficient investigation. The report highlighted that the former principal of the hospital, who resigned amid widespread protests, has not been thoroughly interrogated. “The questioning of the former Principal remains incomplete. A thorough and expedited investigation is crucial,” stated the two-member panel.

The report also raised concerns about possible evidence tampering, noting that the seminar hall where the crime occurred is undergoing unexpected renovations. “Renovation at the crime scene could lead to evidence tampering. The site should have been sealed immediately by the police,” the report emphasised.

Additionally, the NCW highlighted severe security shortcomings at the hospital, particularly concerning female staff. The report pointed out the absence of security guards during the incident and inadequate protection for female interns, doctors and nurses, especially during night shifts. It also noted the poor condition of basic amenities, including washrooms, and the lack of adequate lighting and security measures.

Meanwhile, protests continue to escalate, with unidentified individuals vandalising parts of the hospital on Thursday.
