Dean’s Resignation Ends Protests Over Student’s Death At IIT Guwahati

Guwahati: Students ended their protests at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati following the resignation of a dean of the institute, Professor Kanduru V Krishna on Wednesday.

The students claimed that they have been assured that three more faculty members of the institute will resign within a week.

Boycotting classes, hundreds of students were protesting on the campus since Monday after a student’s suicide on Sunday.

The students decided to end their protest demonstration after a four-hour meeting between the Student Gymkhana Council and IIT Guwahati Director Professor Devendra Jalihal on Wednesday.

According to reports, Professor Jalihal assured the protesting students that four officials of the institute would resign within a week.

A third-year Computer Science student, from Uttar Pradesh, was found hanging in his hostel room on Monday. It was the fourth student death at IIT Guwahati this year.

Students alleged that immense academic pressure and mental harassment by the administration compelled these students to take the drastic step.
