Jugraj Singh: The Hockey Pro Who Once Sold Water Bottles to Support His Family

Jugraj Singh, India’s newfound hero who led India to victory in the finals of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024, has captivated the nation with his inspiring story.

Jugraj Singh emerged as the standout performer for the Indian men’s hockey team by netting the decisive goal in the Asian Champions Trophy final against China. After a goalless first three quarters, the 27-year-old centre-back broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, securing India’s fifth title in the tournament’s history.

Born into a humble family, Jugraj’s childhood was marked by financial struggles. His father, a porter, worked tirelessly to provide for the family, and Jugraj often assisted him. To supplement their income, Jugraj took up the task of selling water bottles and Indian flags to tourists at the Attari-Wagah border.

Despite his challenging circumstances, Jugraj’s passion for hockey never wavered. His talent was recognized by coach Navjit Singh, who provided him with guidance and support. With Navjit’s encouragement, Jugraj honed his skills and dreamed of one day representing India on the international stage.

Jugraj’s journey was not without its obstacles. Balancing his hockey training with his family’s financial needs was a constant struggle. However, his determination and resilience saw him through.

In 2009, Jugraj joined the Baba Uttam Singh National Hockey Academy, where he continued to develop his skills. His hard work and dedication eventually paid off, and in 2021-22, he made his debut for the senior Indian men’s hockey team.
