10 Killed as Delhi Gets Record Rain in 24 Hrs, Schools Closed, Roads Submerged

New Delhi: Delhi was battered by the rains as since Wednesday the national capital received record rain in 24 hours, breaking its 14-year record. At least ten rain related deaths were reported in Delhi and NCR. Out of them, five deaths occurred in Delhi, three in Gurugram and two in Greater Noida.

Delhi received 108 mm of rain in 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday, breaking the record for the highest showers in a single day in July in 14 years. Waterlogged roads caused severe traffic woes throughout Delhi.

At least 10 flights, which were supposed to land at the Delhi airport, were diverted due to the torrential rains. Eight of them were diverted to Jaipur and two were to Lucknow.

Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced that schools in the national capital will remain closed on Thursday due to incessant rains.

A woman and her child drowned in Delhi after slipping into a waterlogged drain in the Ghazipur area in east Delhi.

Two more people died on Wednesday, with one in a house collapse amid heavy rain. In Bindapur area, a 12-year-old – returning home from tuition – was electrocuted.
