Assam Rape Accused Escapes While Being Taken To Crime Scene, Drowns In Pond

Guwahati: Tafujal Islam, a key accused in the rape case of a minor girl died while attempting to escape from police custody on Saturday this morning in Assam.

According to police sources, the accused made the escape attempt at around 4 am while he was being taken to the spot for a re-creation of the crime scene. He escaped from police custody and jumped into a deep pond at Dhing in Assam’s Nagaon district.

Later his body was recovered from the pond with the help of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

As per reports, he suddenly tried to pull the handcuff from a constable’s grip and fled. While escaping he fell in a nearby pond. The constable was also injured. Police are investigating as to how he was able to escape.

Tafujal Islam was also going to take the police to another accused’s residence.

He was arrested on Friday after a 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three persons in Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday evening whiel she was returning from her coaching class. Two other suspects in the case are yet to be arrested.
