At Least 132 Killed in Nepal Earthquake, Over 140 Injured

New Delhi: A 6.4 magnitude earthquake killed at least 132 persons in Nepal late Friday night. According to Nepal authorities, the death toll is expected to increase as over 140 people have been injured.

Tremors of this earthquake could be felt even in New Delhi, over 500 kilometres away.

At least 36 people have been confirmed dead in Rukum West, and 34 in Jajarkot in this quake.

Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal offered his condolences over the terrible loss of life and the severe infrastructural damage caused by the earthquake.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a post on X said, “Deeply saddened by loss of lives and damage due to the earthquake in Nepal. India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and we wish the injured a quick recovery.”

Nepal is nestled in an extreme earthquake prone zone. It is the region where Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, forming the Himalayas.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in 2015, killing nearly 9,000 people.
