Pakistan, which is going through a severe economic crisis on Thursday promised to assist Maldives to address the “pressing development needs” of the island nation.
China and anti-India stance seems to be the new binding factor between Pakistan and Maldives. Pakistan is a close ally of China. President Muizzu of Maldives is also considered pro-Beijing. Both Pakistan and Muizzu are anti-India.
According to economic experts, cash-strapped Pakistan cannot help Maldives in any way except for lip service.
According to a press release of the Pakistan President’s Office, during a telephone conversation with President Mohamed Muizzu, Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister Anwaar-ul Haq Kakar discussed ways to fortify the bilateral ties between the two nations.
Muizzu has also “been assured of the support of the Pakistani government to address the pressing development needs of the Maldives,” the press release added.
Kakar also conveyed his support and assistance to the Maldives’ efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, the release said.
